(Thursday the 5th of December) Darren Millar MS has been confirmed as the new leader of the Welsh Conservative Group in the Senedd (Welsh Parliament), having faced no contest from his peers.
First elected in 2007, he is currently serving his fourth term as the Member for Clwyd West. Since 2021, he has served as the Chief Whip and Shadow Minister for External Affairs and International Relations on the Welsh Conservative front bench. Millar has held several shadow ministerial roles, including Health, Education, and Local Government, and previously chaired the Public Accounts Committee. He is also the founder and chair of the Cross-Party Groups on Faith and the Armed Forces and Cadets.
Before his political career, Millar worked as an accountant in various sectors and managed an international charity supporting persecuted Christians. He is a Chartered Manager and a fellow of several professional institutions, including the Chartered Management Institute and the Royal Society of Arts.
Mr Millar succeeds Andrew RT Davies who resigned on Tuesday the 3rd of December, despite narrowly winning a confidence vote of the Conservative Senedd group - nine for and seven against - led to Mr Davies saying it was untenable for him to carry on. It followed months of pressure over the party's direction in Wales.
Mr Millar was confirmed as a result of gaining the full support of Welsh Conservative Members in the Senedd. It is anticipated that a full Shadow Cabinet reshuffle to be confirmed in due course.
